The story behind Karl Meesters

Karl Nicolaï Meesters (Brussels, October 7, 1979) is a Belgian television producer, concert organizer and media personality. He has also worked as a life and career coach, guiding both elite athletes and visually impaired individuals.

At the age of sixteen, he was diagnosed with progressive cone-rod dystrophy, a hereditary retinal disease that can ultimately lead to complete blindness. Until the age of eighteen, his vision was perfect, but after that it gradually declined due to a genetic mutation inherited from his mother.

In 2021, he was also diagnosed with an extremely rare soft tissue tumor: a sarcoma measuring 9 by 7 by 6 centimeters in the groin. According to the specialist, it was an exceptional case he had only seen twice in fifteen years, with a risk of paralysis in the left leg. Fortunately, Karl Meesters has recovered well.

Career

He worked for Open VLD politician Karel De Gucht during his time as Minister of Foreign Affairs, and for nearly ten years supported Olympic and Paralympic athletes through Adecco and the sports federations IOC and IPC in building careers after sports. At Vincent Kompany’s social football club BX Brussels, he prepared young players for life in the job market.

Recent activities

"Niks te zien" on VRT: In 2023, Meesters traveled the world as a kind of blind travel guide with well-known Flemish musicians for “sound journeys.” The first series of 6 episodes aired from May 2, 2024 on VRT1, and in December 2024 the program won the "Golden Rose" in London in the category "factual entertainment".

In 2025, he participated as a visually impaired contestant in "Dancing with the Stars" on VTM, alongside dance partner Margot Weeda, reaching the quarterfinals.
